The mutiny of 1857 gave rise to the need of providing tents for the army and the units of the civil government. An insight, diligence, perseverance and application was combined to materialize the thought of supplying the victims with one of the most basic need, shelter. The war was a brief glimpse; a stark realization of things to come.
Haji Nizam Din identified the potential during the war and started manufacturing tents for the army in the year 1869. The firm earned an impeccable reputation because of its fine workmanship which resulted in the Government of India placing it on the approved list of contractors for government, railway and ruling chief of India. A new accessible and accommodating production unit was established to cope with the increased demand and lack of working space.
On the outbreak of World War II in the year 1939, the military authorities expressed their appreciation by relying on the company for the manufacture of numerous tents. Heavy military demand compelled NIZAM to manufacture different kind of tents for the military authorities which were sent to various parts of the subcontinent in conjunction with needs of the British forces and a new factory was started in 1942. The hallmarks that the founder had always strived for were to achieve the highest standard in workmanship.
After the formation of Pakistan, Nizam started a tent manufacturing unit in Karachi. The company received the ﬁrst export order of tents from the Iranian Embassy, making NIZAM the ﬁrst tent manufacturer in Pakistan to export tents to a foreign country. To facilitate the manufacturing of tents for export purpose and to cater to the local market demand consisting of defense supplies, the newly formed unit was further expanded.
In the early sixties, a Saudi Army delegation visited Pakistan and placed an order through the defense purchase department for export of military tents to Saudi Arabia; which was followed by another order through the Saudi Embassy for Hajj Tents. Tents and other relief items were supplied to the Pakistan Army during Indo-Pakistan war, 1965.
The beginning of the export trade lead to the mechanization of production which had previously been done manually. For that very purpose; weaving looms, automatic power driven jiggers, waterproofing plant and industrial sewing machines were introduced to cater to the increasing demand of market. These expansionary moves had been carried out which the utmost vigor and their immensity hallmarked management’s commitment to the specialized cause of manufacturing tents.
During the decade 1960-1970, strenuous effort were made to increase exports; which were followed by repeated visits in the accompaniment of different delegations to Middle Eastern & North African countries. The efforts were converted to export merits recognized by the International Export Association with recipient Gold Medallion Award for our services rendered in the exports arena.
New markets in in U.S & Europe were explored in order to expand export markets along with continuous improvement and modernization which resulted in setting up Pakistan Tentage Industries as the weaving unit for NIZAM. The early 80’s saw consolidation of the Middle Eastern markets, development and supply of the outdoor camping products in Europe; Germany, England, Netherland & USA.
NIZAM was presented with an opportunity of supplying tents to the leading Aid Organization i.e. UNHCR, who were facilitating the Afghanistan Refugees which was regarded as one of the largest contract signed between an Aid Organization and a private company.
The new Humanitarian Relief Business Division was further strengthened with partnership between NIZAM and Alpinter Relief, Belgium. Around ten thousand Flame Retardant Tents of five million dollar worth were supplied to Turkish Red Crescent through American Red Cross. The devastating Earthquake in Kashmir, 2005 resulted in a major catastrophe and created a huge demand for rehabilitation after the crisis destroyed thousands of homes.
In order to serve the customers’ needs, the management undertook engineering reconstruction projects in Kashmir & NWFP effected Areas. The engineering division had reconstructed over 800,000 square feet of Prefabricated Hospitals, Dispensary & Self-sufficient houses for earthquake victims within a timespan of one year on behalf of leading Aid organizations.
The strategic partnership has been providing timely solutions to leading Aid Organizations for all their emergency humanitarian needs during desert and mountain warfare, emergency response, disaster events, natural calamity and catastrophe, thus, evolving the company in to a symbol of trust worldwide for Canvas Tents, Fabric & Allied products.
NIZAM started its new Apparel production unit in Lahore to manufacture Denim and woven fabric.
